Kinja'd!!!

We had a knock on our family wagon, we assumed it was a bad ball joint but instead of being fixed, it’s getting worse. The worst part is I don’t know what’s wrong.

When pulling away there is huge vibration and a hell of a knock when you bring the clutch in no matter how gentle and smooth you are. Below 3000rpm in any gear there’s vibration too. The clutch doesn’t slip at all.

My only idea is failure of the dual mass flywheel, but I really hope I’m wrong.

Info on car:

2006 Renault Laguna Estate 1.9 turbo diesel.

91k miles.

Ruled out so far:

Suspension issues, motor mounts, driveshafts/CV joints, engine issues.

Thanks guys and gals.

Flywheel off balance? If it’s balanced by weights and you lost one, I could see that, but I’ve also heard that you don’t need to really worry about flywheel balance for most applications.

You better check the Flux Capacitor, they tend to vibrate when they are wearing out.

I don’t know anything about crazy French cars so I don’t even want to hazard a guess. But I think your best bet would be to get it in the air and duplicate the noise with someone underneath it trying to pinpoint location.

You said you ruled out “suspension issues”, but does that include control arm bushings? They’re often overlooked...

It has a complex dual mass flywheel that can get damaged which is what I think it is right now. So yeah could be flywheel imbalance.

It's hitting 88 and taking me a few weeks into the future to play Forza 6 early just fine though.

Yeah checked all of the bushings. Been under the car for half the day haha. I'm hearing noises when pushing and releasing the clutch at idle which further suggest DMF failure.

Throwout bearing?

pretty soon you wont be able to go weeks, only days, than hours, than nowhere at all.

Yep, also could be crank-walk, but more likely DMF.

Makes sense. Well, it doesn’t, but your problem now does.

Great Scott!

That should just make it noisy until the clutch starts slipping. You can drive an MT car for years with a bad throwout bearing, or at least I have.

Indeed.

I’m thinking you are correct with the flywheel guess. Does it vibrate when just free-revving the engine? If the flywheel was out of balance it would. If not, the DMF could still be bad, just not out of balance per se.

It does vibrate free revving. However we got underneath the car again and after a while found out there’s a fourth (!?) engine/ transmission mount that seems to be worn out. I thought we’d checked them all to be honest.

Awesome! That’s much better than the flywheel.
